I was wrong and I don't want incorrect information to be left on the forum.
The cable connections shown in the OP are correct and do work.

Mine looks identical to what you have in the picture, and it's all ok. No smoke
Are you 100% sure that the pad on the underneath the board has any relationship to the connector on the other side?
Lift the small plastic tab beneath the pin you wish to release...
