I dug out an old VEX radio system I got a couple of years ago from RadioShack.

This is a 6 channel FM transmitter with a small receiver.
The receiver provides a direct PWM output.

But it gets even better. You can still buy the TX/RX combination from
http://www.allelectronics.com/ for about $30.00.

See this link or search the store website for vex

does it include the receiver too? or is it just a transmitter only?
That's fine for ground-based systems (for which it's designed) or lab testing, but I would not trust it for anything in the air. Our UAVs are expensive, and there's no point in scrimping on something totally critical like the RC system.
This is a complete Tx and Rx system.

The Tx has a tether port that allows you to turn off the RF and connect directly to whatever you use as a decoder.

I was only considering this as a lab or low cost test system and totally agree with Chris that a flying thing may need more upmarket equipment.

I did try the TX on one of my aircraft and it seemed to work with my receiver.
I used the Vex rx crystal.

But for the price it looks really good.

I was going to say the same thing 72mhz is air and 75 is ground
