Ardupilot version questions

I have a Jdrones quad copter with the Smaller Mega 1280 ardupilot board.

Its been a few months since I plyed with it and I was getting back to it today.

I've got (but its not soldered up or installed) a Ardupilot board with the mega 2560.

Do I need the 2560 for the latest version?

What is the current "best" version to use?

2.50, 2.54?  earlier?

If you don't want play with memory limits do some new function like "stability patch" you must use 2560, or you must disable some for this patch (see related thread).
The latest supported code (i mean about memory limit) is 2.0.49, but i think 2.0.54 from the "download area" is ok for 1280, compiling and try! :P
