After some fun with the FPV plane I recently built, I was looking for the next step. I decided my next project would be to outfit it with an Ardupilot. I have looked at the Ardupilot before, and just did some more extensive research, and here is what I have come up with. I would also like some advice on what I should buy too.

My plane is an Easystar by the way.

The Ardupilot itself
Shield extension kit with airspeed
FMA XY sensors
Not sure what GPS yet
Programming cable

Now I have a lot of questions.

What is the purpose of the Z sensor, and is it required for the latest Ardupilot? How imperative is it to have?

I will continue my post in about an hour, I am at a friends house, and my dad just came to get me...

No way I'm selling my FPV stuff, lol.
Can the Xbee on the laptop end, perfect for my netbook, transmit data and change flight parameters mid flight? That would make it a must buy for me!
No. Data transmission is one-way. If you want two-way, you'll have to wait for ArduPilot Mega in a month or so. But it will cost more.
Yep my Xbee attaches direct to my laptop, but before you integrate data and make everything complicated get a basic system flying well. You do not need an Xbee to start with, it will just allow you to watch the crash as it happens.

Flying UAS is not as simple as FPV, you need well setup systems before letting them off into the wild blue.
Ya, I have spent a long time doing research on Ardopilot, and UAV systems in general. I have a basic understanding for robotics, as I am involved with the robotics team at my school. I understand its not plug and play, else I would not be getting the Ardupilot, I am just inpatient on getting parts. I don't plan on using everything at once, but just like to know that I already have it for when I do need it. Thanks for the help, I feel confident in the system I will be setting up.
