Can't upload

I stripped my Ardupilot down to just the USB and a rc battery in order to try to upload Blink as a test. Any ideas on how to proceed. Photos attached. Running Windows XP USB on com3.

I get:
Problem uploading

Binary sketch size: 896 bytes (of a 30720 byte maximum)

avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x30
avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x51

Have you been through ALL the debugging tips linked in the manual?

Installed drivers, Com 12 showed up, used that, still didn't work but went back to Debug 5) Set RTS on Close - works!
