ESC hookup to Ardupilot question

Hello,

First time poster here, and new to the forum.

I am just finishing up a custom built quad copter and I am ready to test it out. I have a question on hooking up my ESCs though.

The ESCs I bought were 4 30A Afro ESCs. I am hooking the power to these into my power distribution board, and I am going to power the Ardupilot through the power module.

I wont be hooking up and other servo stuff yet, so I don't need the BEC functionality from the ESCs. Since I am powering the Ardupilot through the power module, I won't need to take power from the ESCs either. How do I hook up the ESCs to the Ardupilot in this case? Would it just be 1 wire hook up for each ESC to the signal pin of the Ardupilot? Would it be the yellow wire on my ESCs that I would use for the connection to the signal pin?

Also, I will need to change the direction (CW and CCW) of some of my motors. What wires from the ESC would I switch around? There is a yellow, red, and a black wire. I imagine that I would switch the yellow and red wires around to change the motor direction?

Thanks in advance for all of the help. I can't wait to get this UAV in the air! :)

To reverse the direction of a motor, switch any two wires going from the ESC to the motor, not from the ESC to APM.

    • That makes sense. Thanks for the answer to that.

Do you have an answer to my other question that involves hooking up the ESCs to the output of the Ardupilot? Can I just hook up one wire for this (signal), if I am using a power module to power the Ardupilot? If so, would that be the yellow wire (smaller triple set wire with the servo connector) on the Afro ESCs?

      Thanks

Yes, if you're powering the ESCs via your PDB, you only need to connect the signal wires to APM, along with one black and red to the PDB.  This is all in the manual here

        • Thanks for the help Chris. I really appreciate it.
