Hi guys, looking at putting together a high speed uav for aerial filming of a ski race that happens in my home town, the boats travel at up to 200kmh. i would like to have a plane able to fly at around this speed and carry a HD Hero for filming purposes, any airframe suggestions? thoughts on EDF? have a few planes at the moment and have come up with a lot of ideas but nothing that can achieve this speed AND carry the HD hero.

cheers

For speed like that, you could probably do it with a multiplex funjet on steroids. There are guys out there who flew it at around 160 MPH.

Have seen the funjet before but not sure it would handle the HD camera. Hadn't seen that video before though, cheers.

200kmh/125mph maximum dive speed isn't that hard in a small EDF HLG, but:

A) Keeping a camera steady against vibration is very difficult

B) 125mph well-controlled cruising speed is difficult

C) Keeping a camera on target is a little bit difficult

Could we get a little bit more info on the finances available, footprint necessary, and altitude/safety restrictions in your situation?

Would like to keep it under the 2K mark, cheaper the better though as i'm currently at uni. i'm thinking of something that i can either mount the HD hero in behind some sort of canopy or that is large enough to to have the Hero external and not influence airflow and airframe balance too much. depending on the plane something with a 3-6ft wingspan perhaps? As for safety the plane would have to stay above treeline but under 400ft, and be off to one side of the river (could mean the camera is not mounted symmetrical and could produce yaw or roll forces due to airflow being diverted sideways.)

Here's a build guide with a Multiplex FunJet with an HD Hero installed.

I think if you were to look into something like a dimond dust, or other similarly sized delta you should be able to achieve your goal. ive mounted a camera on my laser arrow before, it normally does 160 so the camera brings it down a little.  With one this size it shouldnt be that hard for you to mount a camera, just make sure its very well stabilized against vibrations otherwise the vids will be pretty bumpy. Good luck!
