Wesley, I don't have a lot of experience in that area, frankly I'm surprised it's even working! That's crazy fast. What can a really fast gyro output at? I would suggest moving down to 125 at least, until we get this sorted out.
IMO, I'm not really even sure how rates faster than 50hz even help since the servo can't move that fast anyway.

Looking into this further, 50hz should be the standard for manual servos. Digitals can use more, typically up to 333. 125 might be safer.
Permalink Reply by Wesley Chuen on April 26, 2012 at 5:38pm Wow! Lucky my servos haven't burn out or something. According to this site, Align's digital servos should be 200Hz. Wonder if it mean the same frequency thing for APM.
Permalink Reply by yovio on April 26, 2012 at 8:49pm Yeah, you're one of a lucky pilot :) I remember I read somewhere that Analog can took up to 80Hz and digital up to 300Hz.
Actually the servo is not burned immediately. Mine was burned after about 10-15 minutes. I smell burned electronic component and I was so worried that it could be my APM2 that got burn cause the smells come from around APM2.
I realized it was the servo when I touch the servo and it was very hot. It's a cheap servo so not really feel sad about it and I have a spare, it just that my fun got interrupted cause I need to change the servo.
So Wesley, don't try your servo at 490Hz :)
Permalink Reply by Wesley Chuen on April 26, 2012 at 9:12pm hehe, well, it has be on 490Hz everyday, at least an hour a day, for the last 9 days. :) I think the digital one can take it. May not work as desire, but at least it won't burn it, I suppose.
Anyway, the crash striped my front tail torque tube gears and also 2 of 3 of my cyclic servos. I have plenty of those umbrella gears stocked, but no spare digital servos. I'm gonna be down for a few days.

Bummer.
I would think that modern digital servos wouldn't have a problem with 490, because they should be able to see the frame rate is too fast, and just ignore it, with a bit of logic.

Assuming you have Ext. Gyro selected, then you don't even need to use Rate Yaw. Your problem must be with Stab Yaw, your Ext. Gyro Gain or a problem external to APM.
You can actually plug the rudder control (gyro input) directly into your receiver. Now you have *direct* control over the ext. gyro. If it works OK like this, then your problem is the APM tuning. If it doesn't work like this, then it must be external to APM, such as the servo, servo setup, linkage or the Ext. Gyro itself.
