Partick,

RC receivers are designed to work with rechargeable batteries or an ESC/BEC which usually put out 5 to 5.2 volts. Some of the new 2.4GHz receiver can work up to 9 volts. It all depends on the make and model of the receiver. Your 8.4 volt battery will definitely fry an RC receiver designed to work between 5 - 6 volts.

That receiver can be powered by up to 8.6V so yes.
Normally one would use what is known as a regulator or a switchmode power supply to bring the voltage down.
See BEC or similar system.

i didnt see the 8.6v part, maybe you were looking at 4.8-6v and got confused. Its 4.8 to 6 volts, but like Thomas said "ESC/BEC which usually put out 5 to 5.2 ", i have a ESC. So i am good.
