My first RC plane(and hopefully UAV)

Started Jun 1, 2010 0 Replies

I guess you could call this my build report/log type thing for my first rc plane, which is an ARF Multiplex Easystar from amazon.com, even though I started it in January. I wanted to (and still want…Continue

Choosing the right charge rate for lipos?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Morli Jun 2, 2010. 14 Replies

I recently got a 3 cell 11.1V 20C zippy lipo from hobbyking. I was trying to find the right charge rate to use, but I couldn't find anything on hobbyking that said what rate to use. Do you guys have…Continue

A quick wiring question...

I just bought a Zippy Flightmax 2200mAh 3s1P 20C battery from HobbyKing. I have a Spektrum DX6i controller, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not this wire(…Continue

FPV help

Hey, I'm trying to mod the Multiplex Easystar and put a FPV camera in it. I don't want to spend all the money on the full UAV thing, but I want to have a home arrow and the battery life displayed on…Continue

Grant, Yes you need to plug in the balancer tip when ever you are charging, this is cable that lets charger know individual voltage of cells. This cable is nothing but a common( negative) and tap from each cell. So for a 3S LiPo you will find 4…

Grant, It's a good idea to use it all the time. It won't hurt, as I said before it only takes one session either overcharging a single cell above 4.2 volts or draining a single cell below 3 volts to possibly ruin your battery. I'd…

I was thinking the same thing with the battery. This battery is recommended in either a blog or forum post here about modding the easystar for UAV: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6306

Ok, that's good to know. Do you know of a manual to it anywhere on the Internet? I've been looking, but I can't seem to find one.

Yeah, I have one cord on the main charger and one on the balancing. Do I need to plug in the balancing cord all the time, or should I only do it some of the time?

Grant, As far as I can tell this charger is designed for LiPo, that's the good news, however I don't see any reference to balancing circuitry. When you plug the battery in to charge, do you connect one cord to the output of the battery…

That's one of the popular workhorse chargers. It's reliable and yes, it does sense when the battery is charged (i.e. each cell is at 4.2 V).

Ok, I have this charger/balancer. I couldn't tell from reading the description if it had a feature to stop charging when done. I have heard about the exploding issue, which is why I wanted to know if it had a feature to stop charging when done.

Grant, There are as many chargers as there are batteries to chose from. The important look for are that the charger is specifically designed to charge Lipo batteries, and that it is capaple of "balancing" your pack. Here is why you want…

Thanks! That clears things up a lot. Now my question is: do most modern charger/balancers know when a battery is completely charged and stop charging when that point is reached?

Irrespective of what higher charge rate you choose ,if the LiPo is unbalanced( usually after using it couple of time ) the smart charger with built in balancer drops charge rates to 0.3 A ( mine does) if the difference between the cells are more…

I agree with Tom I just go by the mAh rating of the battery

Charge rate depends on the mAh capacity of the pack. Drop the "h" and you have the save charge current. So: 2200mAh - charge at 2.2A. 1350mAh - charge at 1.3A. etc. It should take roughly an hour to charge a fully depleted back. These…

About Me:
I'm just getting into RC. I'd tried some in the past, but that didn't get farther than being 7 and getting the airhogs from Toysrus that never worked that well. Now I hope to get deeper into RC(mainly electric airplanes and helis). I'd like to get a UAV that I could use during airsoft wars as an extra added bonus, but also to just fly around and have fun seeing what I can see.
