Jeff replied to Chris Anderson's discussion Discussion forum for UAVDevBoard, Sparkfun's 3-axis IMU-based autopilot board
"The picture is from http://rcatsystems.com/uav.php. Check out the pdf link next to the Alpha Beta Probes title. A second useful source is: http://web2.airmail.net/warner1/aoa1.htm Also do a Google image search on “angle of attack…"

"Hi Doug, Gagarien from this post compared AOA and airspeed which resulted in my curiosity of using an AOA sensor as a complementary sensor and if it would benfit MatrixPilot. “AOA can be more usefull than airspeed eg. given AOA well…"

" I stand corrected. You are right, crab angle is not the same as side slip. That is good news then that side slip can be computed from acceleration. What is your opinion on angle of attack? Would that be useful?"

"Would there be any interest in adding an angle of attack sensor and a crab angle sensor to MatrixPilot? I envision two simple wind vanes attached to potentiometers to detect the angle of the wind in the horizontal (cross wind) and vertical…"

"Did you have time to test the 500 Hz sampling rate? If so, how did you find it compares to the 50 Hz sample rate? Also, is the 40 Hz hardware filter an RC filter on the ADC input?"

"The smoothing method you use is actually described on the below page. It is the section that begins “Here is another method:, which actually has better numerical convergence properties at the expense of little more calculation.” It is a…"

Jeff commented on William Premerlani's blog post Video of IMUDOT demonstration of the direction-cosine-matrix algorithm
"I see the MMA7260 accelerometer has four g-selects: 1.5g, 2g, 4g, 6g. The UAV DevBoard is configured for 1.5g according to the Sparkfun schematic, did you keep the 1.5g setting on your board? I am looking at the accelerometers from Analog,…"
