"Steve,      So you're not using the standard diydrones mag so the issue is mostly likely how you're mounting it.  You likely need to mount it with components down ... but I really don't know which way you need…"

Testing Magnetometer operation.

I have my quad setup using the APM1 board and have this Magnetometer  HMC5883L Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer installed using a cable to connect it to the board. When i connect to quad to the mission planner and have the GPS showing it has locked onto satellites i have the heading at the top of the mission planner flight data screen, but the compass or heading indication is off anywhere from 90 to 180 degrees. I have the Magnetometer selected and the declination set in the setup in the mission…See More

"Yes, you could reduce the stabilize P value and that will make it tamer.  The issue that you may find though is that stabilize controller is also used by the higher level controllers (like loiter) so if you soften the response for yourself,…"

"Make your controls 1 to 1 with the controller. There is the rate gain and a stabilization gain that the MP defines. The Rate is how well the controller reacts to where it is. The Stabilization is how well it gains to how it should be at a given…"

Leveling a quad

I have my arducopter set up in the + configuration and have tried to level it and so far no real success. when i think i have it i connect to the mission planner and the horizon is always off.  Would it be better to level it using the mission planner rather than a level? Also being new to flying quad would the X configuration be a bit easier, right now the quad is very aggressive in its response to control inputs, even though i am using a fair amount of expo on the controls.Any thoughts would be…See More

"Expo can certainly be used, along with dual rates. I have my tricopter setup that way.  I also use transmitter trims a bit, though I do try to get it leveled out with the configuration software first. I use the tx trims mostly to counter for…"
