Excellent news! I have been seriously considering this platform for my video/photo aspirations. I also was wondering if this platform could be fitted with an auto pilot system. I am so excited to learn more!

Pete, Very useful project! Would love to see your circuits for the ground station and how you wired the Eeprom to change the PID settings on the fly! re your XBee radio interference- I'll assume your RC Tx is on a different frequency, and that…

Reto, I've been testing my Locosys LS20031+ ArduPilot V1 at 38,400 baud. I noticed in Realterm several days ago that the actual data stream of characters is only 1140 characters/ sec, (see following screen cap) which would be ~12,000 baud.…

Expert, I'd have to guess that your GPS is getting a very weak signal. Are you using the gear indoors far from a window, or bottom floor or multistory building or when it is raining? Try moving to near a window. The large altitude "Alt:…

Hi Ken, Are you building an Ardupilot now? I am looking for someone to share notes with or combine forces. I live in West Seattle and fly out of Redmond. Thanks, Paul pgapple at yahoo . com

Chris & tychoc: Thanks for the tips, it is now working. I used my multimeter to learn that the LED wasn't connected to ground, so reworked the solder at the cathode side. More practice with SM! That is one tiny blue LED, the smallest that I…

Chris: I made one of these daughter boards to learn how to do surface soldering. It is working fine powering my LS20031 at 3.3V, but the power LED doesn't light. The LED is speced at 10k. Is it possible this should instead be a 1K LED, like…

Ok, optimum incidence to penetrate into the wind, got it. As you said, in the upwind state 1hz GPS update is too slow to sense a change in directional vector. Can you use data from the FMA XY sensor to measure the planes' angle of incidence?…

Questions about piloting my Hawkeye RC with the ArduPilot

Posted on January 23, 2009 at 2:07am 6 Comments

An old friend developed a nice Rogallo winged RC plane which he calls the Hawkeye. If interested, you can read about it at his site- http://electricflights.com/hawkeyemainpage.html

I test flew the Hawkeye last summer into the fall, until the rains returned to the northwest. It is very portable, easy to fly and designed to carry a camera. Shot lots of video and then realized that I want an autopilot to increase my odds of getting the shots I'm after. I'm game to try an ArduPilot, as… Continue

Good to know you found use for this dc/dc converter. I thing it's a good piece giving out a stabilized 3.3V. There are so many 3.3V units out there that ordering 5 pieces was good choice.
But take care not moving your soldering tip when attaching cables, the socket easily move.
I which I had a similar nice and cheap boards for 5 to 12V for my 520 lines pan/tilt camera. If you see something?

Hi Ken. Thanks for the tips. Finally, I'll solve it with an additional 3s lipo as I have now on my test bench. Fortunately, I can see the DCV level on my OSD in flight, so I can monitor power consumption and not drain the lipo down below 3x3V.
But the additional battery is a 140 g overweight in my mind, especially since I have a huge 6s 9000 mAh lipo!
Since it would be nice to have the pan/tilt camera under a wing, I think I'll do the counter balance with the additional 3s lipo in the other wing half.
