"Thank you all for your replies. Now I have a better understanding. And will post back my results of the experiment with the can in free fall..... I hope it will be as expected.....   Vinay"

"The way to mathematically model an accelerometer is to take all sources of acceleration (i.e. forces) and subtract gravity. So, in true free fall, you subtract the only force (gravity) and get zero reading (or air drag in actuality). When sitting on…"

"you read nearly 0 g on all axis because of airdrag, you will get a little reading, which is pointing to ground (the axis depends on the can rotation)"

Martin Seven replied to vinay r's discussion Interpreting 3 axis acceleration readings
"It is, but since accelerometers measure using inertia they wouldn't detect anything. You can look at it from the other side: an object standing on the ground is actually accelerating upwards (at 1 g) in a falling reference frame. Once this…"

Martin Seven replied to vinay r's discussion Interpreting 3 axis acceleration readings
"Objects in freefall are weightless, experiencing zero net acceleration (so all three axes will read 0 g)."

Interpreting 3 axis acceleration readings

Hi,          I have interfaced Freescales 7620 3 axis accelerometer and am getting the readings properly. Now I have difficulty in understanding the readings, If it is mounted on table stationary, then the X,Y read 1.65V (0g) and in Z axis 0.85V (-1g).My question is: What will be the readings in free fall condition? Assuming it wont tilt in falling. My application involves measuring forces on a can during free fall. In real world there will be airdrag, gravity acting on the can. The can will…See More

"No the USB to serial converter lists the USB port as a serial COM port in the device manager, Besides it also works with hyperterminal. In labview also in the "choose port i/o" list the com port is available."
