EasyStar Mods - Spar Upgrade

The more equipment that is installed on the plane, the more load the wing will need to take. To prevent the wings from flexing too much, the plastic spar can be replaced with a carbon one.Materials:1. Hacksaw2. Masking tape3. Carbon rod (5/16" OD or 8 mm)4. Original sparProcess:1. Line up the two spars to get an idea of where you will have to cut the carbon spar.

2. Wrap the the location that you are going to cut the carbon spar with masking tape (only a few times around is necessary). The tape will prevent the carbon from fraying when it is cut.

3. Mark the carbon spar where it will be cut, using the plastic spar as a length reference.4. With the hacksaw, cut the carbon spar.

    Zach,

Yes, as pointed out in the previous posts, this mod has been described on other websites, but it never hurts to put your own take on how you did the upgrade as the other modification descriptions may not be as clear or useful.

I am just starting out with the Easy Star and have purchased an extra fuse and tailplane assembly to experiment with. I have also purchased the MiniMag/Easy Star Power Pack upgrade kit and a Lipo 3S 2200mahr battery to extend flight times. In anticipation of a more powerful motor I also upgraded the Castle Creations Thunderbird 18 ESC with a Thunderbird 36.

Another upgrade that you might want to consider is the addition of the Easy Glider Pro wings to the Easy Star. This mod will improve the lift and add ailerons.

    Regards,
    TCIII
  • These sights do have tons of great ideas. I thought I would share my experience in transforming the EasyStar, which as a stock plane comes underpowered and with little control authority, into a higher performance plane that can be either used for good fun or as a great platform for UAV development. As my blog continues, I hope to adapt this plane to carry a camera (still or video) and be semi-autonomous. I feel that the modifications I have included so far are a necessary step to achieving this goal.

I made my carbonfibre rod 8" longer (4" each side obviously) and filed the tips to a sawtoothed sharp end and rotated them in place quite easily..
I CA'ed one end in permanantly.
