About Me:

I am a home energy auditer in the Grand Rapids, Mi area and hold a commercial, multi-engine, instrument rating for fixed wing aircraft.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I currently have an aquacopter and ladybird FPV and they are a blast to fly. I am using ardupilot 2.0 on the aquacopter and it flies very smoothly. My plan for it is to fly a gopro over my kids while they are at rowing practice to get some unique video of them.

"Please make me an offer. I have over $1300 into all of this and I don't need to sell any of it, so please, no low ball offers.

Here is a link to a youtube video I took with this setup. I had just got this all put together and yes, still learning…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Analysis of FAA appeal in the Trappy case: Agency created its own problems
"I think we all should be hopeful that the FAA gets some regs down on the books regarding this. If they don't, it will be left up to the states and you all have seen what kind of nightmare that will bring.

If they do require a license, you will also…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Mark Harrison's blog post Trappy talks flying, regulation, and starting a business
"Except that he hasn't beaten them yet as there has been an appeal and the regs still stand. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the FAA letting us get on with commercial uses, but don't start telling people that the feds have been beaten when haven't…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post FLIR intrdroduces $350 smartphone IR camera, new low-cost sensor
"Marty, That is the problem with this. It doesn't have a sufficient frame rate to be useable. All you are going to get is a capture every second or so. In other words, it will probably be blurry.

Don't get me wrong here guys.. I think it's great…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post FLIR intrdroduces $350 smartphone IR camera, new low-cost sensor
"I have a FLIR b50 for my job and this flir one doesn't come close. They say you can see air leaks around power outlets but all the show is a cold spot on the wall. An air leak will look like this (sorry, didn't have one from an actual wall outlet,…"

Hello everyone, I am wondering if anyone else has had issues with their purchase from Aquacopters. I know several people have posted on other forums that they have experienced many delays and have even had to file claims against them for…

Scott VanFossen commented on Dez Socks's blog post Nice entry level FPV Quad
"I don't have another 5.8 system to try to pick up the signal and unfortunately the documentation that came with this is severely lacking.
Here is the manufacturer's link for the Ladybird FPV. There are some really good photos here of the camera…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Gary Mortimer's blog post Model aircraft owners drawn into privacy debate on drones
""While the technical differences are important, the true distinction between a  model plane and a drone stems from the motivation of the operator."
This is a very important statement in the article. It seems to me that this is the same argument…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Dez Socks's blog post Nice entry level FPV Quad
"I bought one of these a few weeks ago and it is a blast. I haven't gotten a feel for FPV flying yet, but this little quad is crazy fast and nimble.

I tried flying FPV outside the other day and was having fun until I lost the video signal briefly…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Infrared camera for less than $300
""There is no way you could find a thermal camera for 150 dollars"

Hey, all I am trying to say is you get what you pay for. I'm not saying it's a scam either. I am sure you will get some really blocky thermal images. But the quality of what you get…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Infrared camera for less than $300
"Oliver, its the same as the other one. You get blobs. Also, the frame rate is so bad on those cheapies, you couldnt really do anything with it. I watched the video and he made bad examples for the home energy part. You cant see those things without…"

Scott VanFossen commented on Gary Mortimer's blog post Activists’ drone shot out of the sky for fourth time
"Peter, That is exactly what I am curious about. Why hasnt the FAA stepped in and slapped the operator of the drone with a fine yet?
Other questions I have: Why does the FAA have to control drones in uncontrolled airspace. 500' and below should not…"
