About Me:

I'm a mechanical engineer that's taken a detour down the software road with a iPhone travel app company. I also founded a micro fuel cell company, Ardica Technologies. I've got a bit of a weakness for making things I should buy - in my spare time I make racing boards for kitesurfing, furniture, and a host of electronics projects.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm especially interested in consumer accessible aerial photography and video using quad copters at the moment. And I do love making things that fly!

Tobin replied to Tobin's discussion Mysterious higher noise levels in air module
"Just figured out the problem!
I had mistakenly presumed that the module required 3.3 V, as the logic was 3.3 V and the VDD for the HopeRF module is 3.3 V. Changing it to 5 V in reduced the noise from 45 to 28. It is still about 9 units (I understand…"

I've been seeing 20 - 30 dB higher noise levels on the air module of my 3DR radio (which is connected to a px4 board), which appears to be severely impacting the range and link reliability. I currently see about 23 - 27 dB of noise in the ground…

We're contemplating making a batch of px4 control boards, as it isn't possible to buy them through 3dr at the moment and we need more for our project. We can make extras for the community if there is sufficient interest.Let us know if you're also…

Hello,I wanted to ping the community for your recommendations for a high end motor manufacturer to work with on the design of some custom motors for an aerial video quad that we are developing. We have already  initiated discussions with RCTiger and…

We are considering trying to use the Hope RF RFM69HW radio module for telemetry and low resolution/frame rate video streaming on our aerial video quad. Does anyone have any experience using this board? It looks like it's performance is better in just…

Tobin replied to Mark's discussion Does the PX4 Autopilot work?
"I've been using a px4 and found it to be very very difficult to get flying well. I've yet to achieve anywhere near the same level of stability that I had with the APM after many many times the amount of tuning time. I also agree with other's…"

"Thanks for the suggestion Randy. I'm having the same problem as Steven and in my case I sometimes see an image or do before the program gets stuck.
What can we do to make the connection more reliable and/or focus the lens another way? Different…"

Tobin commented on Tobin's blog post Clean/ lightweight way to mount radio receiver
"Fair points Hugues. In my case, the total craft weights about 600 grams, so 20 grams here and 20 grams there starts to add up fairly quickly. I also use a single enclosure for all of the electronics and wiring, which ends being fairly clean and…"

"Adam - So far I haven't seen any issues with EMI. There's a good ground plane on the bottom of the RC receiver, that I'm hoping will minimize EMI problems. I'll let you know if any bugs emerge."

For fellow wire haters out there, here's a way that I figured out for attaching a 6 channel Hobby King receiver directly to the APM 2.5 without those pesky wires and connectors. The complete assembly of the APM 2.5 and the receiver is now only 18…

My Turnigy 9x transmitter/receiver has recently developed an unwelcome habit of going to half throttle for about 2 seconds during power up of the transmitter. More specifically, it goes to exactly 1474 during power up, with the low threshold at 1055…
